There is a lot of information you
can get about pregnancy from books, the internet and friends, but
there’s a lot less information about the subject of intercourse
during pregnancy. This is an issue that comes up for all couples
as there are concerns and many questions regarding the safety of
sex that you may have. One of the biggest is “What is normal?” What
is normal varies for everyone, but communication is important during
this time of your sexual relationship. This will let you have a
satisfying and safe sexual relationship during your pregnancy.
If you are in good health and are having a normal
pregnancy, you can have sex and experience orgasms during all
of the stages of your pregnancy. The fetus is well protected by
the amniotic fluid that surrounds it. There’s also a thick
mucus plug that seals the cervix and the penis does not come into
contact with the fetus during sex.
The guide to intercourse during pregnancy is
the woman’s own comfort. It is perfectly normal for your
feelings about sex to change. At times your desire might increase
or decrease. During the first trimester, many women experience
nausea, vomiting and fatigue which will obviously decrease any
desire you may have once had. In the second trimester fatigue
and nausea subside and many women have an increase in sexual desire.
There is also increased blood supply to the pelvic area which
can mimic sexual arousal. During the third trimester desire subsides
again as the uterus grows larger and having intercourse becomes
uncomfortable. A lot of women may feel unattractive at this time
or they are lost in thought with the delivery date approaching.
Make sure you share your feelings with your partner so there is
always an open line of communication with each other.
There are two types of sexual behavior that
aren’t safe. When engaging in oral sex, your partner should
not blow air into your vagina as it can cause a blockage of blood
vessels by an air bubble that can be fatal to you and your baby.
You should not have sex with a partner whose sexual history is
unknown to you. If they have a sexually transmitted disease and
you become infected, the disease may be transmitted to your baby.
Both you and your partner will experience many
feelings during your pregnancy. If either one of you have any
questions, you should talk with your doctor or midwife.
